DC’s ambition to build a cinematic universe began long before the DCEU officially existed. Before the MCU became a global phenomenon, Warner Bros. had already tested the idea with Green Lantern — a failed attempt that ended without creating a lasting foundation. After Marvel proved the power of long-term planning with Iron Man, Warner Bros. quickly accelerated its own universe strategy. Man of Steel became the starting point of the DCEU, with Superman at the center of a new DC mythology designed to rival Marvel. The DCEU started with a powerful foundation. It owned some of DC Comics’ greatest characters and delivered iconic portrayals: Henry Cavill’s powerful Superman, Ben Affleck’s mature and weathered Batman, and Gal Gadot’s unforgettable Wonder Woman. But from the beginning, the DCEU was driven by urgency rather than patience. Instead of gradually building characters and emotional connections like the MCU, Warner Bros. rushed toward the Justice League, attempting to assemble a universe before its foundation was fully established. The biggest strategic mistake was placing the creative direction of such a massive shared universe in the hands of Zack Snyder. His unique visual style and mythological approach created memorable moments, but a shared universe requires more than one filmmaker’s vision — it needs long-term planning, creative balance, and a strong production structure. Beginning with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the DCEU’s problems became impossible to ignore. Constant studio changes, shifting creative directions, internal conflicts, and public disagreements gradually pushed the universe into chaos. Today, with new corporate changes reshaping Warner Bros., the old DCEU may still have a small chance of fragmented continuation, but its original vision has already become a unique chapter in superhero cinema history.
