Curator's Note
While audiences were still hoping that the old DCEU might retain some legacy, James Gunn chose a complete reset and rebuilt the DCU from the ground up. Unlike the MCU, which carefully preserved its established characters and actors as long-term assets, DCU abandoned the previous continuity entirely. The decision came with a clear cost: major heroes such as The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman — characters with proven audience appeal — were pushed aside, leaving Superman as the only major pillar immediately available to carry the new universe. Meanwhile, The Batman remains in its own Elseworlds continuity, unable to join the main universe while still competing for audience attention. As a result, Gods and Monsters begins with a lineup built largely around less familiar characters, while even the Justice League remains absent from the early plans. For a universe attempting to establish global influence, this represents a significant challenge. More importantly, the DCU may be facing a problem similar to the old DCEU: a shared universe heavily shaped by a single creative voice. James Gunn’s personal style, humor, visual language, and musical taste have become deeply connected to the identity of the new DCU. This strong authorial signature may become its greatest strength, but it may also become its biggest limitation. The DCEU failed because of rushed planning and inconsistent direction. The DCU was created as a chance to correct those mistakes, yet it now faces a familiar question: can a shared universe balance a creator’s vision with the diversity and flexibility required for long-term growth? May all go well for this universe, and may we witness the true Justice League on the big screen.
