Curator's Note
Resident Evil is not simply a video game adaptation, but a world-building experiment that has continued for more than two decades. At its center lies a persistent question: when biotechnology crosses the limits of nature, can humanity still control what it creates? In 1996, Capcom introduced Resident Evil by combining enclosed horror spaces, biological threats and modern science. The fear was not based on supernatural forces, but on technology created by humanity itself turning beyond control. Umbrella transformed the story from monster survival into a larger conflict involving corporations, experimentation and the ethics of life manipulation. The true horror of Resident Evil is not the existence of monsters, but the creation of a force humanity can no longer contain. The live-action films that began in 2002 chose a different path from the games. Instead of directly adapting Chris, Jill, Leon and Claire, they created Alice as a new central figure and transformed the survival horror concept into an original cinematic apocalypse. At the same time, CGI productions followed another route. Degeneration, Damnation, Vendetta and Infinite Darkness returned to Leon, Claire and the game's timeline, preserving the connection with the original mythology. The Resident Evil universe exists through two parallel identities: an original cinematic mythology and an extension of the game's official world. With Welcome to Raccoon City and later television adaptations, the franchise continues to revisit its origins while exploring new interpretations. Its lasting appeal does not come only from monsters and outbreaks, but from the larger question behind them: who should control the power to reshape life itself?
