Chinese rising auteur Lan Canzhao's realist feature 'A Place Where the Sun Shines Bright' has scored another major international accolade. The 27th edition of Italy's Lucania Film Festival has officially drawn to a close, with this acclaimed Chinese production—anchored by star Jin Sha—standing out from a competitive international field to snag a Special Mention in the International Feature Film Competition, making it one of only two victors in the category.

Established in 1999 and rooted in the southern Italian region of Matera, the Lucania Film Festival has long championed independent cinema, emerging directors, and distinct auteur voices. This year’s international jury, featuring industry experts from Iran, Egypt, the Philippines, and France, evaluated the contenders against rigorous standards of artistic merit, narrative craft, and creative value before bestowing the honor upon the film.

Shot primarily in Chifeng Town and surrounding villages in Guangdong's Chaozhou, the film weaves together four interconnected coming-of-age narratives, painting an intimate portrait of ordinary people grappling with familial bonds, life-altering choices, and a deep-rooted nostalgia for home. Prior to its Italian success, the picture triumphed at the inaugural Mali International Ethnographic Film Festival—taking home Best Feature Film and Best Cinematography—and nabbed a Best Film nomination at the 4th Bishkek International Film Festival, showcasing robust global momentum.

As the soul of the film's ensemble, Jin Sha delivers a deeply internalized performance as Wenyan, navigating the character's emotional turmoil at a complex familial and existential crossroads with remarkable nuance. Notably, Jin also served as a main competition juror at the 48th Moscow International Film Festival, actively bridging international cinematic cultures in multiple capacities.

Born in 1994, director Lan Canzhao has long dedicated himself to cross-cultural filmmaking, with his collective works earning selections at over 600 international film festivals and showcases worldwide.
